As last year, Gala Harriers’ ever-popular Eildon 2 Hills Race again became the 3 Hills Race on Saturday, using all three summits known as Trimontium by the Romans (and TryRunning’em by Gala Harriers) and this year held in perfect running conditions.

A fine turnout of 74 runners lined up for the start in Gibson Park as usual, taking in the often treacherous and always challenging terrain before finishing again in the park amongst the children’s sports and ribbon dancing.

First across the line was Sullivan Smith from Cambridge and Coleridge Running Club in a superb new course record of 36 minutes and 9 seconds.  Second place went to Alastair Anthony of Ochil Hill Runners just 10 seconds behind the leader, with Donald Naylor from Hunters Bog Trotters third in 38.20.  Last year’s champion Gala Harrier Fergus Johnston came in an impressive 5th place in 39.09.

A fabulous run by Harrier Fiona Dalgleish brought a triumphant victory for her in the women’s race in 44.57, with Rachel Fagan (46.11) and Shelagh King (1.08.55) ensuring that Gala retained the Ladies’ team trophy with JogEarlston a well-deserved second.

Excellent runs too from all the Gala men – Jamie McGowan (42.59) Chrys Murphy (45.22) Peter Gibson (46.06) Martin Clarke (47.10) Alan Johnston (47.37) Derrick Brydon (47.54) Tommy Knox (50.40) and James Purves (53.15) brought the second team prize home for the Harriers, after Hunters Bog Trotters and in front of Carnethy. The prize for the first TD6 local runner went to Lachlan Glaves and special mention should be made of Ally McGilvray who despite being sent the adjusted race start time for inclusion in the Border Telegraph turned up half an hour late but still managed to catch Tigger en route – questionable how many hills they climbed between them!

The club sends its best wishes to the Hunters Bog Trotter who came to grief on the descent and suffered a knee injury, but who is recovering well and looking forward to next year’s race already!  Our thanks to the ambulance team who took her off the hill and to the volunteermarshalls who supported her until the paramedics arrived.  Thanks also to everyone who helped in any way to make the day a success, from the registration and results team to the race organisers, marshalls and caterers.

Earlier in the week, Gala Harriers had been instrumental in the success of the Queens Baton making its way around Tweedbank track with Thomas Otton, Billy McCulloch, Ross Falconer and Neil Renton taking their turn, after Kerry Sandilands and Fraser Wardhaugh had accompanied it through Earlston.  And just the day after, Jenny Forbes and Colin Welsh had won their respective gender categories in the clubs’ 800 metre race at the track.

Gavin Bryson continued his successful summer season Haddington 10k

Brief update:  last weekend (8 June), Gala Harrier Gavin Bryson continued his successful summer season with an impressive 11th place in 35 minutes 31 seconds in the 157-strong Haddington 10k race, accompanied by in-form Colin McCall (16th in 36.31) and Jamie McGowan (18th in 37.25), with John Arnold in 55.14. The Purves and Grainger families however decided to be a whole load sillier and took part in the Color Me Rad 5k at Ingliston, Edinburgh, during which runners are showered with coloured paint powder.  (Photo attached with following email.)

Dianne Lauder was again in action this weekend with an impressive 6th place in the senior women’s race as part of the Great Trail Challenge in the Lake District, representing Scotland in this prestigious international event.  And up in Forgandenny, Perthshire, Gavin Bryson won the Strathallan 5 mile race in 27 minutes 49 seconds, beating his Dad Mark again by a margin and following up his excellent 6th place in the Edinburgh Marathon 10k last weekend in a time of 35.27.

Several Gala Harriers had been in action in Edinburgh over the previous weekend as well, braving the torrential rain, thunder and lightning at the start of the Marathon and Half Marathon.  In his first marathon, Rory Campbell achieved a splendid personal best in 3 hours 34 minutes, with Elaine Johnston also running the 26.2 miles for the first time and finishing in 4.55.  In the half marathon, Judy Scott and Lynn Taylor finished together in 2.00 hours, with Anne Purves finding the going tough but hanging strong in 2.31.
